FED: Refugees with family links given priority

SYDNEY, April 10 AAP - Accelerated discussions with other countries suggested 311 provenrefugees may soon be resettled, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today.

Asylum seekers found to be refugees with family links in Australia would be given priorityto resettle here, Mr Downer said, echoing comments already made today by Immigration MinisterPhilip Ruddock.

The government announced this week that 311 asylum seekers on PNG's Manus Island andon Nauru had been found to be refugees.

"Their immediate future is that they'll be resettled, obviously," Mr Downer told Seven Sunrise.

"We've said we will take our fair share of them.

"Those with family links in Australia, first and foremost will be given priority interms of coming to Australia.

"We've had discussions with a number of other countries and those discussions are nowcontinuing in an accelerated form, so we hope that the resettlement process can take placepretty soon."
